THE HERBALIST FLANNEL SHIRT – 6 WAYS

12.05.22

Few things are associated with cottage life more than a flannel shirt and after a full year of lakeside living, I can attest to their quintessential status.

If I think about the essence of a flannel shirt, these words come to mind:

Comfort | Reliability | Timeless | Outdoors

And when it comes to the best Canadian-made shirts, Power Of My People is #1 in my books. I’ve been wearing their shirts for the better part of a decade and every season they release the most beautiful selection of fabrics. This time I was immediately drawn to The Herbalist Proper Fit, which is made from a gorgeous muted mossy green, 100% cotton flannel.

It’s incredibly cozy and I’m excited to share 6 SOPHISTICATED ways I’m styling it to prove that flannels can indeed be very chic!

Read on for 3 polished and 3 casual outfits to try with any flannel shirts in your closet.

LOOK 1/6

This is my Queen Bee take on wearing flannel and I love the strength and sophistication of this look. It’s the perfect festive power suit for any sort of holiday work event or occasion that calls for something on the professional side.

UNMISSABLE DETAILS

Power Of My People nails it every time on their shirt details. From the simplified cuffs with a single button (perfect for rolling or folding over a top layer), to the seamless front placket (a contemporary choice), to the slightly angled breast pocket for the perfect wink to quirkiness.

LOOK 2/6

This look is my take on elevated casual. I love a simple, silky set under an open flannel shirt with statement slippers and a classic knit over the shoulders. I think this outfit is perfect for those days during the holidays (or anytime throughout the winter) when you’re hosting or visiting someone’s home and want to feel relaxed and put-together at the same time.

FEELS LIKE CASHMERE

The brand’s claim that “This cotton shirt is so soft and cozy that you may mistake it for cashmere.” is entirely accurate. It has a beautiful weight and ultra soft hand feel that combines the texture of a worn in t-shirt with a sumptuous knit.

LOOK 3/6

I wanted to try styling this flannel shirt untucked in a way that also felt polished. A cropped vest layered over top lets the lovely curved shaped of the shirt tails be seen. I went with a very minimal black skinny jeans and a tall back leather boot anchor the look, a statement coat ties the palette together and a uniquely shaped bag with gold hardware .

HOW I LIKE MY SHIRTS TO FIT

I personally like a more relaxed fit when it comes to my button ups. I take a size up from my usual size in tops (I’m wearing a Medium here) and find this offers just the right amount of roominess. If you’re planning to wear yours under more fitted blazers or knitwear, you might prefer your usual size.

Power of My People offers their shirts in XXS – 3XL.

LOOK 4/6

This look is giving major #cottagecore vibes within a minimalist aesthetic and I love it! This is the perfect outfit for a chilly day on the lake running some errands or popping into my favourite bakery and coffee spot. The Herbalist Shirt easily tucks into my go-to jeans and layers under a cozy shearling jacket.

HOW WARM IS IT?

I don’t reach for my cotton poplin or silk shirts much in the winter because they offer little in the way of warmth or insulation. POMP’s flannels are a different story thanks to the napping process, which creates a brushed texture that traps warm air & keeps you toasty.

Plus, unlike many flannels available, these are 100% cotton without any synthetics added.

LOOK 5/6

For the third of my three polished outfits I wanted to try a look that played with proportions in an unexpected way. I love the look of a button up done right to the top with its collar popping out over the neckline of a chunky knit. It’s the perfect mix of structure and softness and the little white button adds just enough brightness to draw the eye right to it. With the cuffs peeking out and accessories in the same tone as my sweater, this look feels cohesive and contemporary.

LOOK 6/6

Last but far from least, is how you’ll most likely find me wearing this flannel, which is over a white tee (also by Power of My People) with my favourite jeans. Doesn’t get much simpler than this! I typically tuck my t-shirts in and then wear my shirt open with cuffs rolled. A few bits of gold jewelry add just enough intentionality to complete any look.

Thank you for introducing me to this brand – the Gentlewoman shirt is speaking to me, so gorgeous!

  2. Leigh says:

Love love all the outfits on this post. Consider me influenced!

  3. Hanusia says:

Wow, I looove that shirt and all of these outfits! #3 and #5 are my favorites for the fun layering inspo, but #6 is the one I’m most likely to wear, too. Flannel is a big part of my winter wardrobe, and all my flannels are plaid/checked, which I love but I’d never even considered a solid color flannel shirt can look so chic! Definitely adding this one to my Christmas list…

  4. Brenda says:

I LOOOOOVE POMP shirts! I have 4. Two flannel and two poplin and they are truly the best. They wash like a dream and are so incredibly cozy. I searched for the perfect white shirt for years and years and finally found it in my white one from POMP. I am not an advertiser, just a real person. I think I will head over and buy my fifth, which my husband can give me for Christmas. 😉
