Happy first day of summer folks! I’m excited to welcome the season with open arms (pale as they may be) and plan to savour every hour of sunlight and warm weather that I can. In order to do just that, I’ll be keeping my hats handy and ready for action!
I haven’t always been a fan of hats but as I’ve brought a couple of carefully chosen chapeaus into my collection I’ve been convinced otherwise. This being the case, I thought you might be interested in discovering some of the incredible milliners and hat brands I’ve bookmarked over the years.
Today I’ll be sharing 9 summer hat brands, with a focus on woven styles, that are worth checking out. The round-up includes a variety of price points (with several under $100), both understated and statement designs and a Canadian millinery I was delighted to discover. I dare say there is a hat for every head, so if you’re in the market do read on!

1 | BROOKES BOSWELL
MADE IN – PORTLAND, USA
PRICE RANGE – $180 – $400 USD
MY PICK: OPTIMO PACKABLE HAT IN HONEYCOMB
Brookes Boswell millinery is an incredible source for handcrafted, made-to-order hats in a wide range of styles and shapes. I bought the Optimo Packable Hat in Honeycomb via Garmentory a couple of summers ago and it’s been a great hat for summer holidays, hot afternoons around home and basically all activities involving a lot of sun and little shade. It is indeed packable, however, I may have over estimated it’s shape resilience as the brim is now seemingly permanently wavy. I might try flattening it out with some books but it doesn’t bother me much and I still get plenty of use out of it.

8 | JANESSA LEONÉ
MADE IN – USA + COLUMBIA
PRINCE RANGE – $180 – $375 USD
MY PICKS: KLINT + LUCIE + CEZANNE (Packable)
Janessa Leoné would have to claim the #1 spot on my list of milliners. I’ve had the pleasure of wearing JL hats for several years now in both the cold and warm seasons. They are made extremely well and each design is carefully understated, leaving the clean shapes and thoughtful details to shine. I cannot recommend these hats enough and feel that they are definitely worth the investment.
The Klint straw boater is my go-to hat for the summer as it’s both stylish and functional. It’s also highly versatile and goes with everything from floral midi dresses to shorts & a tee. I find that the brim is wide enough to offer protection but not so big that you feel like you should be at a derby!

ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR MILLINERS I SHOULD ADD TO THE LIST?

Loved your suggestions so much I took the plunge on the Cuyana summer hat. I love it! Any travel/packing tips to make sure I have this lovely for many years to come? Or would you suggest hand carrying on planes, trains, and automobiles is best?
Oh that’s great to hear Ana! I usually hand carry my hats to avoid any issues but I’ve also packed them in a suitcase before. I fill the top part with soft stuff like pjs or a scarf and then make sure the brim lays flat on other clothes and isnt too squished. Hope that helps and you have your hat for many trips and years to come! Xo
Hi Lee, Terrific hat roundup! What I do when my hats loose shape is that I heat up a kettle and steam it back into shape. This works brilliantly! Thank you for the hat recommendations.
Thanks so much for that tip Kimberley! I will definitely try steaming it. xo
A lovely roundup! I just ordered the Folding Panama Hat from Cuyana and it seems like it will be great for summer travel. Do you have any hat styling tips?
Oh great choice Krystal! That is a perfect travelling hat. Good question about hat styling. If you mean in terms of hair, I usually just wear my hair down or in either a single or double braid. Then when I take it off for the evening I can let out the braids and have a bit of a wave. If you mean in terms of outfits, I usually just add a hat to whatever I’ve got on and roll with it haha. Thanks for reading and have a great week! xo
