Thoughtfully Made Underwear

05.15.18

This post has been a long time in the making but I’m excited to finally be able to share a round-up of all the responsibly made underwear brands I’ve personally shopped and the ones I have on my radar for the future. There are 30 in total! I get so many questions about this closet category because underwear is a daily necessity (at least for most of us!) and it can be tough to source options that are functional, well-designed, fun to wear, ethically made and sustainably sourced.

The truth is that it’s taken me a long time to land on some brands that I really love and honestly, even the bras I wear often have room for improvement. I also still wear some bras that I bought before I was committed to shopping responsibly, so we’ll take a look at those too.

In doing this research I’ve come across so many new designers and brands that I’m excited to try over time and hope you’ll find some that can work for you too! Today I’ll begin by running through my own collection of under-things and follow that with a directory of all the brands I’ve compiled.

Ready to talk undies? Me too, so let’s get to it!

TAKE ME STRAIGHT TO THE DIRECTORY

Style Bee - Responsibly Made Underwear

MY UNDERWEAR COLLECTION

I’ll begin by acknowledging that underwear is a particularly subjective and personal section in the wardrobe, so of course, what I love, might not be everyone’s cup of tea. I’m ALL for whatever type of bra gives you confidence, whether that minimal lining, push-up padding or au naturelle! The directory below includes a diverse selection of brands from full coverage and pure support to little and lacy so there is should be something for every preference.

MY SIZE: I’m a 32C pretty much across the board and have been a 30D in some specialty lines in the past. I usually wear a S or M bra depending on the brand. While my size is fairly small I still find I need a bit of support and something to keep the girls in their proper place.

MY PREFERENCE: Natural support and comfort are paramount for me. I occasionally opt for full coverage (mainly when wearing a fitted, light colour top) but usually I go for a simple bralette style. I’m all for the natural shape of the breast but don’t feel comfortable when the ladies are dancing about under my top yet I don’t find underwires comfortable either, no matter how well-fitting the bra might be. I’ll rarely go braless save for select circumstances if I’m wearing a fitted top and it’s appropriate for the occasion.

MY LIFESTYLE: I work from home and in casual environments a lot, so I don’t often feel the need to worry about nipple discretion or things like that. I’m usually wearing a relaxed fitting top as well.

So that’s where I’m at when it comes to bras, when it comes to undies I’m a pretty committed Hanky Panky fan and I’ll get into why that is next!

GO-TO UNDERWEAR – BOTTOMS

I am a diehard Hanky low-rise cotton thong devotee. They feel the most comfortable on me personally, and the wide wast band never digs in on my hips, moves around or chafes my skin. I order the organic cotton version for breathability. I know thongs are not everyone’s cup of tea but they’re mine fo sure. I just like a sleek, line free, look and hate any added bulk under my clothes.

PRICE: 3 for $60 USD – Canadian shoppers when you order direct Hanky Panky uses BorderFree shipping so you never get surprise costs on delivery.

CARE: I wash on delicate in a mesh bag (and sometimes not) and air dry them (they dry overnight). I’ve had several pairs of these for well over 3 years in constant rotation and they’ve shown no signs of wear. Whereas any copycat versions from Victoria Secret or Joe Fresh have all frayed and essentially disintegrated at this point.

FABRIC: Body & Crotch Lining: 96% Organically-Grown Supima® Cotton, 4% Spandex; Trim: 90% Nylon, 10% Spandex

SIZE: Fits Sizes 2-12 best (hips measuring 35″-42″) – I wear the OS and find they’re a very forgiving spandex blend and will definitely span a range of sizes (I’m usually a S or M in underwear bottoms and these could easily fit a smaller or larger caboose).

Thong style not for you? No prob, Hanky Panky offers TONS of different underwear, bra styles and sleepwear options. They have lots of full-coverage, plus size and various rise options too.

MADE IN THE USA : Learn more HP’s Ethics and Sustainability here.

I also just discovered HP’s LingerieCycle program which helps you make sure you’re unwanted underwear (of any brand) get’s properly recycled and not left in a landfill. Just request an envelope when you place an order. I think this is pretty great!

SHOP FROM: HANKY PANKY | SHOP BOP | NORDSTROM (and probably lots of other retailers I haven’t shopped from personally)

I WISH: They made a 100% Cotton option.

Next on my list to try is the HP Bare Collection.

GO-TO BRAS + FULL BOTTOMS

My most worn bras are the MIEL Sisters Nana Bra. I also wear their Iris Hipster bottoms to bed almost every night. I find the bras have a nice amount of support and coverage with no strap slippage. They’re easy to put on and feel very comfortable over a full day of wear. The straps are adjustable and you can unhook them to make a cross-back version as well (although they also have a racerback style, which is great). The bottoms are super comfy for bed with a big t-shirt or fitted tank and rarely ride up throughout the night.

PRICE: Bras are $39 USD and Hipsters are $20 USD and they’ll occasionally have deals on orders of 3 or more. You can save 20% off your first order when you sign up for the newsletter too!

CARE: I wash on delicate in a mesh bag (and sometimes not) and air dry them (they dry overnight). I’ve had several pairs of these for well over 2 years in constant rotation and they’ve shown little to no signs of wear. That said, my bras have pilled a little from use under knitwear.

FABRIC: Soft breathable microfiber and Spandex blend (Spandex, Nylon, Poly) with Guardin™ built-in botanical antimicrobial protection against stains and odors. Bottoms have a cotton gusset. There are many colours available in both.

SIZE: Made to fit Sizes 0-18. Available in S/M (what I wear in both items), M/L and L/XL.

PRODUCED IN COLOMBIA. The items I have are made in Canada, however, MIEL has since switched to working with a Colombian manufacturer, which is where the co-founders are originally from. The factory employs a large percentage of women and they are paid above market wages with benefits.

SHOP FROM: MIEL SISTERS | ANTHROPOLOGIE (and possibly other retailers too)

I WISH: They made a slightly darker nude, had a lower neckline and resisted pilling better. Maybe a double layer version too? All-in-all though, I’m a big fan!

Next on my list to try is the Lele Sports Bra.

MY FULL COVERAGE – UNDERWIRE – STRAPLESS BRAS

These are the three oldest bras in my collection and they’re still in good shape, fit well and serve a purpose when I need zero nipple show-through or a strapless solution. I’ve considered replacing them a few times but while they still serve a purpose for me I haven’t seen a need to. When the time finally comes to replace these, I’ll look into some of the options in the directory! From the top:

AERIE SUNNY LIGHTLY LINED FULL COVERAGE BRA: I got this bra ages ago as my ‘t-shirt’ bra option. It’s supportive, smoothing, very comfortable, has no push-up padding but is lined well enough that I can wear it under a white silk shirt and not worry about anything being too revealing. It’s also the perfect nude shade for my skin tone so nothing shows through. I’ve washed it countless times (always on delicate, air dry) and it’s essentially as good as new.

$50 CAD | Made in China | Sizes 30 A – 40 D | I wear a 32C in this one and it fits like a boob glove. | 64% Nylon, 36% Elastane | Many colours and nude shades available.

CALVIN KLEIN PERFECTLY FIT MODERN T-SHIRT BRA: This is another veteran in my bra collection. I wear it less and less these days but it comes in handy every now and then under tight fitting dark tops when I’m in the mood for a bit of lift and smooth coverage.

$46 USD | Made in China | Sizes 30 A – 40 D | I wear a 32C in this one and it fits like a boob glove. | 72% nylon/28% elastane | Many colours and nude shades available.

CALVIN KLEIN STRAPLESS BRA: This is not a bra I wear for comfort but it has stood by me through a lot of fun times and tricky dresses. I wear it under open necked tops like my silk Georgia Midi and Ella Tanks and literally anything strapless of finicky. It’s super low profile but keeps everything in place and stays up really well thanks to the silicone (or something sticky) strip around the interior base. The lining is very minimal so it’s not like a push up but more of a gentle shelf, haha.

$44 USD | Made in Thailand | Sizes 30 A – 40 D | I wear a 32C in this one and it fits great. | Shell: 78% nylon/22% elastane. Trim: 81% nylon/19% elastane. | Three colours available.

OTHER SOFT BRAS AND UNDERWEAR I WEAR OFTEN

These are a section of wireless bras and comfy underwear I’ve worn for years now.

Clockwise from top:

BASE RANGE SOFT BRA: I have this style in both black and nude and it was one of the first ones I tried once I started exploring responsibly made options. It’s still a favourite and one of the comfiest I’ve worn. I like the thick elastic base and the seams for a bit of shape and lift. Straps are adjustable.

$62 USD | Made in Portugal | I wear S | 94% Organic Bamboo, 6% Elastane

NUDE LABEL: I bought this Classic Bra and Triangle Brief set a couple of years ago and while it fits and feels great on, I find the clasp on the back has a tendency to come undone. This has been fixed in recent versions. Lots of sizes/colours available at Undone (a Canadian based shop).

45 € and 13 € (on sale) | Made in Spain | I wear a S in Bra and M in Briefs | 93% Cotton / 7% Elastane

COSABELLA NEW FREE BRALETTE: This is a super comfy options that I love under sweaters and just about any top that’s not a tank or low cut. I could easily sleep in this one.

$45 USD | Made in Italy | I wear S | Viscose/Poly Blend

PANSY BRA: I’ve got a few of these and really like them for ultimate comfort but find they do shift around and the straps stretch out with time.

$48 USD | Made in California | I wear M | 100% Organic Cotton | Full bra option for larger bust sizes

LAND OF WOMEN: I have the Classic Bra and Classic Brief set and LOVE them for a more sultry but still sleek and comfortable option. I have a S in both but would size up in the bra if ordering again.

Set is $125 USD | Made in NYC | Sheer Mesh | 87% Nylon, 13% Elastane

MARY YOUNG: I have a few sets from this fun Toronto based line. The bras are super cute (I have the Contrast and Logan) but I usually I save them for special occasions. I LOVE the luxe high waist mesh briefs, mesh panel bikini. I wear that style under dresses, skirts, tights, loungewear and even sometimes to bed when I’m feeling fancy.

$53 – $76 CAD | Made in Canada | I wear a M in both | 95% Bamboo, 5% Elastane

LATEST ADDITIONS FROM EVERLANE

As you likely know, Everlane released an underwear collection earlier this spring and there was lots of press and hype about it. I was generously gifted a selection of all the styles to try out but before I shared anything I wanted to actually try them out. Now that I have I can share a quick run down of my thoughts, the sizes I received, the sizes I’d buy and how they’re holding up post washing. Overall, I think they’ve done pretty well!

THE BODYSUIT: This is the piece I was most excited about but ultimately it’s going to require a special set of circumstances to get worn by me. The cotton is crazy comfy and the low back is flirty and fun but is not bra friendly so I have to be prepared for that. When you use the washroom you are buck naked! I also find the shoulder straps are inclined to slip off if I don’t adjust them regularly. I received an XS as this was said to run large but the S would have probably been better in the seat and length for me. It’s definitely a good option for pairing with a linen skirt or high waist jeans for the summer but not 100% perfect, in my opinion.

$30 USD | Made responsibly in Sri Lanka | 92% Supima cotton, 8% elastane | Sizes XXS – XL | 4 colour options

THE TANK BRA: This is by far my favourite item from the whole collection. It’s so comfortable that I’ve literally slept in this bra because I forgot it was on. The supima cotton is supremely soft, the double lining gives great coverage and support, the wide straps and covered elastic band stop if from digging in anywhere too. I was sent a S and would order that again. The only change I’d make is to have the straps be a touch shorter as they are a tiny bit loose on my shoulders.

$22 USD | Made responsibly in Sri Lanka | 92% Supima cotton, 8% elastane | Sizes XXS – XL for 32A – 38D  | 4 colour options

THE HIPSTER: These are extremely comfortable and one of very few full coverage briefs I’d consider wearing under pants day-to-day because the cotton is so thin and soft. It doesn’t add bulk and there are no visible lines thanks to the edge seam. I was sent a M in these and they’re a touch loose but not baggy anywhere. I’d probably order that size again since it’s a low rise.

$12 USD or 3 for $27 USD | Made responsibly in Sri Lanka | 92% Supima cotton, 8% elastane | Sizes XXS – XL | 3 colour options

THE HIGH RISE HIPSTER: I really like these for under skirts and dresses but probably not for everyday. That said, they make a super comfy sleep bottom with a t-shirt or tank. I received an S in these and thought they’d be too tight when I first opened them but the cotton is very stretchy and they fit great without digging in. I’d order a S or M next time.

$12 USD or 3 for $27 USD | Made responsibly in Sri Lanka | 92% Supima cotton, 8% elastane | Sizes XXS – XL | 3 colour options

THE THONG: I really like the thong but it’s not going to replace my Hanky Panky favourites. It’s very comfortable and there is neither too much or too little fabric in any area. The rise is great to hit at a flattering spot on the hip and avoid any visibility. I received a S but might go for a M to ensure zero dig-in/visibility.

$12 USD or 3 for $27 USD | Made responsibly in Sri Lanka | 92% Supima cotton, 8% elastane | Sizes XXS – XL | 3 colour options

THE BIKINI: This was my least favourite of the bunch but I’ve never been a big fan of bikini briefs. I found this was too low of a rise and didn’t cover my butt fully which resulted in underwear lines in pants that didn’t have a back pocket. I received a S in these but I think a M would have been better.

$12 USD or 3 for $27 USD | Made responsibly in Sri Lanka | 92% Supima cotton, 8% elastane | Sizes XXS – XL | 3 colour options

POST WASHING: I’ve washed all of these items at least a couple of times now and they didn’t shrink or lose their shape. I machine washed delicate and hung to dry. The straps on the Bodysuit and Tank Bra did seem to want to twist a little bit but if you flatten them out when wet they dry OK.

That just about sums up my current underwear stash! Now onto the directory!

Style Bee - Responsibly Made Underwear

RESPONSIBLY MADE UNDERWEAR DIRECTORY

The directory includes links to shop, general price point, where the line is made, how their transparency rates and whether or not the line offers plus sizing. My goal is to make this underwear resource as inclusive and comprehensive as possible so I hope you’ll share the brands you love if they’re not included (esp. plus size and nursing friendly options). I’ll be adding this to my new ‘Directories’ category too so it’ll be easy to access at any time.

Here’s how I’ve broken down each listing:

IMAGE: I’ve included an image for all the brands to give you a very general sense of the line. Each collection has a much broader range of options so don’t let the one I picked throw you off if it’s not necessarily your style or colour.

PRICE RANGE: $ = Under $50 | $$ = $50 – $100 | $$$ = $100 – 150 | $$$$ = Over $150

PRODUCT OFFERING: For example if the brand is focused on underwear + swimwear or sleepwear etc. I’ve made a note so you can decide whether or not you’d like to see what they’re up to outside of the underwear realm.

WHERE IT’S MADE

TRANSPARENCY:

  • MINIMAL = Not explicit about where it’s made but I’ve managed to find out via other sources
  • GOOD = They are upfront about where the product is made and provide some details
  • EXCELLENT = The brand makes a point of divulging details about where they make their products and their efforts to ensure ethical production and may even have their own factory and facility.

WHETHER OR NOT PLUS SIZING IS AVAILABLE

I’ve also included other stockists for the brand in case you’re interested in shopping from a retailer that’s more familiar to you.

Thank you so much for this article! I’ve looked a bit more at Boody, and looks like they might be made in China but I could only find this on their Australian FAQ page. https://www.boody.com.au/pages/faq#reamaze#0#/kb/ethics-and-eco-credentials/where-are-boody-products-manufactured. Likely still going to place an order with them. Thanks again for the recommendations!

  3. Mary Grogan says:

Bought the nana bra from Miel, your post says it is made in Montreal. When I look at the label on the bra it says it is made in CHINA. I can’t say how disappointed I am to read this. Also, the bra runs small so I am going to have to return it.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hi Mary, I’ve just sent you an email and I followed up with MIEL to sort this confusion out. I’ve since heard back and it sounds like you must have received a Nana Bra in a style and colour that was still in stock from when they produced in China in the past (they have < 2% of product remaining from this batch). MIEL would be more than happy to switch the bra you received for a Made in Canada one in whatever size you need. I was also able to get updated production information and MIEL has switched from Canada to Colombia (which is where the co-founders are originally from). I've updated these details in the post as well. Apologies for any misleading information! Hope we can get this sorted out for you ASAP.

  4. Clodia says:

Love your selection! Ethically made undies are really hard to find, so this is super helpful. I’m from Spain, so I already knew (and tried!) The Nude Label, they’re great! I’ve also had my eye on a new brand from Barcelona that specialises on handmade luxury lingerie (it reminds me a bit of Harlow & Fox but with a smaller size range). It’s called Sofía Luzón Lingerie and I can’t wait to try it too!

Thanks Clodia! I’m glad you’re a fan of the Nude Label as well. I’m excited to look into Sofía Luzón Lingerie, at first glance they have some stunning pieces. Thanks for the recommendation! xo

As someone from a Sri Lankan Tamil family, I wonder if producing in Sri Lanka is really “responsible”, given the political situation there. One of my favourite charities, Freedom From Torture, reports that they have more referrals from Sri Lanka than any other country. https://www.freedomfromtorture.org/tainted_peace_torture_in_sri_lanka_since_may_2009 Doesn’t trading with a regime like that raise ethical questions?

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hey Nina, That’s a good question! I’m no expert on trade policy and ethics but here is a link to learn more about the factory in Sri Lanka that Everlane produces their undergarments with. It seems like they are up to some good things!

I love the baserange bra! but only in the cotton fabrication. After I got one, I was on the lookout for more in different colors but in the last year have only come across the bamboo version. I tried those and didn’t like the look of the fabric or the feel. I love high cut leg, high rise bottoms and can’t seem to find ones in organic cotton with both those qualities. Luckily, hanky panky makes the lace thongs in high rise (and I don’t have to worry about the cut on the leg) which is also my go-to most days, but those are nylon and I don’t like their cotton versions. Lol, I’m very particular with underwear! I love pima cotton for anything but it’s especially hard to find in underwear, so was kinda looking forward to what everlane would come out with, but the options don’t look great. maybe i’ll try the tank bra for those hot days. in general, I like french brands for lingerie but don’t know about their sustainable/ ethical practices.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks for sharing your underwear insights Jane! It’s good to be particular but I know it can be frustrating 🙂 Which French brands do you like? I have a set by YSE that I got ages ago and it’s lovely but I rarely wear it. Their sizing is also very limited. Would love to hear your favourites! xo

  8. As usual, super detailed information and damn I want everything now 😀

I have a lot of items from PACT. I’ve developed an allergy to chemicals, including clothing dye (I tested positive to formaldehyde which is even used in organic clothing dye processing, and has been a real challenge!) I love PACT as a brand for their ethics and sustainability and the great basics at excellent prices. About half of my underwear is from PACT and I have some from Everlane. The timing of this post is perfect as I am looking for a few more options and hopefully a few of these brands will also be naturally dyed or formaldehyde free.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks for your thoughts on PACT Andrea! I have been so tempted to try them out but haven’t yet. I hope you find some options that will work for you. I can imagine that’s a tough allergy to get around especially since garment info can be hard to suss out. If you do find some please let me know as I’d be happy to add notes or new brands those for others with sensitivities and allergies. xo

Thanks so much for this fantastic post and the directory, Lee! Can now look forward to some ethical comfort when I’m next in need of some new underwear 🙂

I have found the holy grail in Luva Huva knickers (not so much in their bralettes as I need more support but could work for other people). Came across them when looking for Europe-made, totally breathable and comfy underwear on Etsy, and this particular model is the best knicker I have ever tried – that elastic frilly finishing is so comfy that I’ve found it hard to go back to the typical more solid trimmings: https://luvahuva.co.uk/collections/knickers/products/pansy-frilly-knicker And for those looking for a more luxurious feel and almost instant drying, there is a satin option as well. On the down side, this is not for those looking for invisible-under-clothing underwear.
