His + Hers Style Basics

05.27.16

It’s been quite a while since my handsome fella, Dave, has made an appearance on the blog but I’m so happy to have him here today! Usually, when blogger’s share couple’s posts I cringe a little (ok, A LOT) but I thought it would be really fun to collaborate on a styled post that’s all about great basics, personal style and share a few snaps of my favourite person. So cringe if you must! One of my go-to basics brands, AMVI, was kind enough to send us a few of their super soft shirts to play around with and Dave has finally found USA made t-shirts that he can rely on. Woot!

A few people have asked me how Dave feels about my decision to shop responsibly and how he deals with my expensive taste. A good question indeed! The truth is that he’s actually the person who inspired me to make the change. Dave has an ultra lean closet (it’s honestly 1/2 the size of mine) and has made a point of supporting local makers and ethical brands for even longer than me. He’s all for buying fewer better things that are truly made to stand the test of time and style. When it comes to my expensive taste, he’s down, as long as it’s on my credit card!

In today’s post we’ll be sharing the following fun stuff:

  1. Why we both love AMVI tees.
  2. What Shopping Responsibly means to each of us.
  3. 8 style questions we asked each other and our (unedited) answers.

We’ll start with Dave, so here goes!

HIS STYLE BASICS

1 – Why do you love AMVI tees?

They don’t shrink up, they have a long torso (key for anyone over 6′) and they are ethically made.

2 – What does shopping responsibly mean to you?

When you buy something you are in essence casting a vote for that thing. I think that shopping responsibly is about making decisions based on alignment with your values. Thinking about the possible environmental and social impacts as well as the financial impacts of the purchase is the responsible thing to do.

3 – What is the most worn item in your closet?

Jeans. All day every day.

4 – What was the last item you bought with thought and intention?

My hat.

5 – If you could give your college self 3 style tips what would they be?

I like what university Dave was up to. My general approach to style hasn’t really changed.

6 – Other than your closet what do you like to invest in?

Quality tools. I have fun using them, they can be used to create value and the right ones last a long time.

7 – What are 3 things you have currently and hope to keep in your wardrobe forever?

Hat, watch, U of T Engineering jacket. Although its not totally wardrobe, I might count my Tanner duffle too.

8 – What first struck you about Lee’s style?*

Pure sophistication.

9 – What is the least practical item in Lee’s closet?*

Definitely in the footwear category. When I first met Lee she had some really crazy stuff. Now most of those are gone but every once and a while I am taken aback by shoes.

10 – What is your favourite outfit that Lee’s ever worn?*

Oh! That black silk jump suit. So good.

HER STYLE BASICS

1 – Why do you love AMVI tees?

They are easily the softest tees in my closet, and I’m a certified t-shirt hoarder. They wash so well and seem to only get better with wear. They’re great for tucking in, wearing loose or tying into a knot depending on my mood. I also love that they’re made from start to finish in the US (ideally it would be Canada) and still fairly priced.

2 – What does shopping responsibly mean to you?

For me I think it comes down to being mindful. This can be a matter of considering the materials, the hours or the skill that went into the making of a product. It also comes down to considering the wants vs the needs and being alert to the difference between those. But conscience also plays a part in that I want to spend my money on something that I can feel good about and that’s worthy of being part of my life.

3 – What is the most worn item in your closet?

My black cocoon coat by Elizabeth Suzann. It’s timeless and the perfect layer for any season.

4 – What was the last item you bought with thought and intention?

My Veja Esplar extra white sneakers.

5 – If you could give your college self 3 style tips what would they be?

  1. Just because it’s on sale does not mean you need it.
  2. Low-rise jeans flatter no one.
  3. 5 t-shirts for $15 is not a reasonable price point. They will fall apart and were likely made unethically.

6 – Other than your closet what do you like to invest in?

Our home, good food and travel.

7 – What are 3 things you have currently and hope to keep in your wardrobe forever?

A diamond ring from my Grandma, a beautiful black skirt from my Mom and my cocoon coat by Elizabeth Suzann. I can’t wear them all the time, but when I do I can wear them all at once.

8 – What first struck you about Dave’s style?*

Well, he was wearing a fake moustache the night we met but when I saw him again after Halloween it was clear that he had his own personal style, a flair for thrifted finds and the confidence to rock whatever he felt unique and comfortable in.

9 – What is the least practical item in Dave’s closet?*

He still has a ridiculous beanie (like this) with a propellor on top. Luckily it spends 100% of the time in the closet.

10 – What is your favourite outfit that Dave’s ever worn and why?*

I love when Dave wears a fresh white or black t-shirt, a worn-in pair of jeans, brown boots, a tweed blazer and his hat. He looks so dapper and timelessly handsome. The whole look pairs perfectly with his amazing sense of humour and go-to drink, a Manhattan with bourbon.

Thanks so much Jodie! He reluctantly obliged and I’m so happy he did! He’s a pretty sharp dresser right? So glad he’s not the type to wear sports jerseys and ratty t-shirts exclusively 🙂 Have a great weekend girl! xoxo
