It’s officially time to kick off the Fall 10×10 Challenge! This will be the final one of the year and I’m particularly excited for it. My good friend and capsule closet guru Caroline of Unfancy is back to join me in hosting and we’ve both been looking forward to reconnecting with the 10×10 community making some new #10x10Friends!
This challenge will mark a baker’s dozen for me and I’ll admit I never thought I’d be saying that when I first started these in 2015. What’s even better is that I’m just one of many well-seasoned 10×10 participants at this point. In the days leading up to this one I was chatting with lots of 10×10 veterans who were just as excited to get back into it and I think that’s a testament to the exercise itself and community we’ve built. I won’t gush about it too much but I will say I’m overjoyed by what this little exercise has become and even more thrilled about where it’s going!
In an effort to keep this intro concise, here’s what today’s kick-off post will cover:
- A quick note to 10×10 newbies and veterans alike
- My 10×10 Challenge Goals + Posting Plans
- Closet Considerations: Weather & Activities
- The 10 Items I’ve Chosen
So let’s get to it!
If you’re new to this space and wondering what the heck a 10×10 Challenge is, no worries! See the link below to get all the details you need.

A NOTE TO 10×10 NEWBIES AND VETERANS ALIKE!
As I was pulling together my 10 items for my 12th challenge I got to thinking about the 10×10 community and wanted to share a quick note and a reminder to myself and to anyone else who needs it. So here goes!
The point of this challenge is to explore personal style, get creative, have fun and connect with some awesome people along the way. Everyone is welcome no matter where you bought your 10 pieces or what your taste happens to be.
If you’ve got 10 items of clothing that you want to get more use out of, that’s truly all you need! It doesn’t matter if your 10 items aren’t all ethically produced, handmade, on trend or the same indie designer as anyone else’s.
If you’re willing to show up and give it a try, that on its own is awesome! It doesn’t matter if you’re not great with a self-timer, don’t have a perfect space for photos or don’t own a clothes rack. Those things are not the point.
So on behalf of myself and the 10×10 community, you are welcome, just as you are and we’d be thrilled to have you join in!

MY 10×10 CHALLENGE GOALS
HAVE FUN WITH STYLE STORIES AGAIN
I used to have such a blast shooting my outfit styling stories but I fell out of the habit. So I’m going to do my best to get back into that routine this time around. I might not be able to create them daily but I’m going to give it a try!
PUT MY NEW BOOTS TO THE TEST
You’ll soon see that I’ve cut my footwear options in half from my usual number (that’s down from 2 to 1) and will be putting my new weatherproof suede boots to the test! I’ve had soooo many questions about these and wanted to make sure I gave them a good amount of use before sharing my review.
SHARE MORE OF THE 10×10 COMMUNITY
I love discovering new accounts and seeing all the unique and inspiring style and people who emerge through these challenges. I also know that the feed can be a bit overwhelming so I’m going to do what I can to help highlight more participants to follow over the next 10 days. Keep an eye on my stories for all that!
POSTING PLANS
I’ll be posting on my instagram feed and stories each day but will also include a few photos of each outfit with source links daily on this post (yep, the one you’re reading). The updates will be light on copy but I’m going to include any styling tips in my stories and will save a highlight. Just trying to manage my time and not double up my workload too much!
Tune back in for Look 1 later today!

CLOSET CONSIDERATIONS
THE WEATHER: It’s going to be below seasonal temperatures here in Guelph, Ontario for the next 10 days so I’m going to need to stay warm. Today is going to be the warmest at 11°C but then it will hover around the 7°C mark. That means I’ll need layers and my coziest accessories will be coming out to play!
MY ACTIVITIES: The next ten days are going to be pretty typical for me with a mix of meetings, working from home and cafés, dinners with Dave and family, daily dog walks and workouts along with the usual errands and business out and about. It’s going to be pretty great!
So here’s what I’ll be mixing and matching for the next 10 days!
- 1 Wool Vest
- 1 Long Coat
- 1 Long-Sleeve Tee
- 1 Cashmere Crew
- 1 Cashmere Cardigan
- 1 Pair of Black Jeans
- 1 Pair of Ankle Boots
- 1 Pair of Raw Silk Wide Pants
- 1 Floaty Blouse
- 1 Jumpsuit

MY TEN FALL ITEMS

GREY CASHMERE SWEATER | bought by me | Everlane | $100 USD | I wear a M for easy layering. | Made responsibly in China
This is the same grey cashmere sweater I included in the very first 10×0 I ever did! It’s still one of my favourite fall pieces and I’m so impressed with how it’s help up over the years. It’ll be fun to mix it in with new colours and items I haven’t paired it with before.
BLACK CIGARETTE JEANS | gifted | Everlane | $78 USD | I wear a 27 and the fit is slightly relaxed. I’m about 5’7 and 125 lbs. | Made responsibly in Vietnam
I got these jeans to test out when they were released with the Authentic Stretch Denim collection and I LOVE them. They’ve been a mainstay in my weekly wear counts since they arrived and I love styling them with sweaters, blouses and simple tees alike!
JANE BLOUSE | bought by me | DOEN | $145 USD | I wear a S and the fit is very generous. | Made responsibly in India
The Jane blouse has been on my wish list for so long and when this print was released I had to take the plunge and order it. It turns out that all my favourite fall tones are in the pattern and it fit seamlessly into my colour palette. I’m excited to get to know this piece better and play around with a new shape and a bit of print!
RAW SILK PANT | gifted | Jamie & the Jones | $245 USD | I wear a Small and the fit is relaxed. I’m about 5’7 and 125 lbs. | Made responsibly in Nashville
Since they made their way into my closet in August these pants have been in heavy rotation. I’ve worn them over 15 times already! I knew I couldn’t go 10 days without them and wanted to try them out with some other colours and items I might not normally pair them with. Read my original review here.
MICRO RIB LONG-SLEEVE | bought by me | Everlane | $30 USD | I wear a S for a slim fit. | Made responsibly in Peru
As soon as it gets properly chilly (as it has) I find myself reaching for my fitted long sleeved tops. This one is the Pima Micro Rib from a recent Everlane order I placed and I’m obsessed. It’s the perfect base layer for under sweaters, vests, and any other layering task you have on hand. I also wanted to include a crisp white piece to keep the palette feeling fresh.
CARIE SUEDE BOOT | bought by me | AQUATALIA via Nordstrom | $450 USD | I wear a 7 and the fit is TTS. | Made in Italy | Weather Proof
I know, just one pair of shoes folks! I’ve always had two pairs of shoes to work with in past 10×10 challenges but this time I decided to try limiting myself to just one pair. These yummy chocolate suede, block heeled, tall ankle boots were my final choice because they’re all I’ve been wearing lately anyway!
CAMEL WOOL COAT | bought by me | Marvin Browne London | N/A | Similar option here and here.
You know it’s a closet hero when you can’t wait to pull a piece out from storage and that’s how I felt about this camel coat. I bought it last year on your honeymoon in the UK and it has been a personal favourite ever since. I’m excited to pair it with my suede boots, umber pants and to try creating some classic looks and new outfits with it!
BOLINAS DUSTER | gifted | ONLY CHILD | $275 USD $233.75 USD with ‘STYLEBEE15’ to save 15% off any order now through October 31st. | Wearing size OSR | Made responsibly in Oakland, CA
This fabulous wool vest is one of my latest additions and I’ve been wearing it every chance I get! It’s been great for these chilly days that are warm in the sun but cold in the breeze! I’m looking forward to wearing it with lots of pieces in my closet and pairing it with some unexpected items this 10×10. See the review here.
WIDE LEG JUMPER | gifted | Hackwith Design House | $180 USD | I wear a Small and the fit is relaxed. I’m about 5’7 and 125 lbs. | Made responsibly in Minneapolis
This jumper was one of my favourite pieces to wear all spring and summer long. I always feel great in it and I wanted to see if I could style it in some new ways for the colder season. It’s going to look great over my paisley blouse and I’m excited to see how it works with some sweaters and my new duster.
BOXY CARDIGAN | bought by me | Everlane | $150 USD | I wear a S and it’s slim through the sleeves and relaxed through the body. | Made responsibly in China
Last but not least we have my new boxy fit cashmere cardigan. I decided to order this piece after reviewing my ‘would have loved’ list from last winter. A slim, short cardigan in a light colour was in my notes and I think it’ll be great with lots of the pieces I’ve got in this 10×10 line-up!
So those are my thoughts, goals and 10 items for the #Fall10x10!

CATCH MY KEY TAKEAWAYS & SOME THOUGHTS ON THIS CHALLENGE IN MY STORIES & FALL 10×10 HIGHLIGHT

Enjoyed seeing your outfit combos. I have the HDH Wide Leg Jumpsuit in the light denim blue color and I haven’t been able how to make wearing a shirt over the jumpsuit work. Did I see that you tucked the sweater into the belt to create the higher waist? I’m thinking a camel or cream colored sweater might work with the light blue denim color.
Also, I’ve always considered vests kinda silly – like why wear something long without sleeves? Why not just wear a cardigan? But, I see how it added nice texture and turned out to be really versatile, adding a layer without too much bulk. Thanks for changing my mind on long vests! Ha!
Hey Lauren! Haha yes, vests can seem a bit odd but when you find the right one they open up a lot of style possibilities! I think a caramel or cream sweater would work perfectly over your denim jumpsuit. I also think navy would pair really well or a rich umber. I did indeed use the belt to tuck the sweater in for a higher waist. I find a cropped length is pretty key over a wide leg bottom to break up the proportions nicely. I hope that helps! xo
Look 8 is my favorite so far.
Thanks Carol!
Hi, I recently found your blog and I’m so inspired by your commitment to sustainable clothing and your knack at putting together beautiful outfits. Question about your Everlane cashmere–do you handwash it? I noticed the care instructions say to dry clean, but I would like to avoid doing that. I bought a sweater from them several years ago and it pilled horribly, so I’ve avoided purchasing anything else from them, but now I’m tempted by this item.
Thanks Amy! So glad you’ve found your way here. I have tried hand washing my Everlane cashmere and it comes up ok but honestly find it much less of a hassle/time commitment to take it to an eco-dry cleaner nearby. I also find it holds it’s shape better (when dry cleaned) and can shrink if hand washed (even with the Laundress shampoo). I know lots of people have varying views on this but ultimately I’ve found that dry-cleaning a few times (maximum) a season is the best solution for my needs. This is 4 years old now and has held it’s quality very well. Hardly any pilling to speak of. I hope that helps!
How are you finding the fit of those cigarette jeans? They look great on you; are you glad you sized up? I would love to try them but I live in New Zealand and returns are expensive, so I’m trying to do some size research 🙂 Thanks for any tips you can give me!
Thanks Whitney! I love them but I think I must be right in between a 26 and a 27 (give or take one too many pasta dinners haha) so the 27 fit perfect out of the box but now they’re a bit on the loose side in the waist/hip. I haven’t washed them yet though so I imagine they’ll tighten back up. They have a good amount of stretch so I think I’d get into the 26 just fine but I worried they might be too snug through the thigh. I would compare the measurements on the Everlane sight with a pair of stretch jeans you like the fit of. I hope that helps!
This is my first 10×10 challenge. So far it’s going well. Had to wash my white cami after it got crazy-stained from cooking in it, but I think I got the stains out.
If you or anyone would like to follow along, my Instagram is @rebekahrabbit. (Shameless self promotion, I know, lol.)
Thanks so much for joining in Rebekah! I hope your cami is okay 😛 xo
Hey Lee, the styling of day 2 is all the heart eye emojis! Gorgeous inspiration for autumn layering here in the u.k.
X
Thanks so much Sophie! Hope you’re having a lovely week so far. xo
I am loving all the Fall colours in your second outfit! I was wondering if you can comment on the sheerness of the white micro rib tee. I have and love their washed black version, but have been holding back on buying the white because I hate layering and wouldn’t want to have to wear a tank under it. Is it opaque enough over a nude bra?
Thanks Sarah! For sure. It’s not 100% opaque but it’s much less sheer than any of the smooth pima cotton tees I have (a long-sleeve and a crew neck tee). I’m completely comfortable wearing it over a nude bra (without a tank layer) I don’t find there is any significant show through. I’m not wearing a tank underneath in my insta stories today, but the video wasn’t super close up. I hope that helps!
I love your style. It’s totally different from mine but I still find it really inspiring. I’ve been wanting to take part in the 10×10 challenge for so long but still have yet to do it. Maybe next time! Or maybe I’ll join in part way…
xo,
Sarah

So looking forward to this. I really will be challenging myself this time as I’m covering everything from full on suited and booted corporate wear, through business casual, to outdoor weekend wear and a party as part of this one! The only way I could get my head round that was to not include shoes – I always think they can transform an outfit completely. You’ll find me on Insta as @allyhird.
Love your picks as always, even if your style is so completely different to mine!
Wow! That’s such a broad range of outfit requirements Ally, good for you! I’ll keep an eye out for your posts and thanks for joining in! 🙂
I love what I see! Excited to see how you pull these looks together, especially the jumper + floaty top combo!
Thanks Andrea! Love your picks too! I’m excited for that combo myself. Just deciding whether or not to save it for last 😛
I love these 10 X 10 challenges because it helps to look at them when packing for a trip. I like to pack lightly but am always paranoid that I am not taking enough. I obviously don’t have your exact wardrobe (I wish!) but I can adapt a lot of my things to work the concept. I’m especially intrigued with the one pair of footwear, but being that I am walking a lot on this trip, I think it’s safer to take a couple pairs to rotate.
Love your picks–they’re a perfect balance of cozy, cool, and rich!
Thanks Lo! Love all your picks too! How do you find the Marais Boots? They’re so perfect it hurts but I’m not sure the suede can handle Ontario haha. xo
real world application: 10 day trip with carry-on. doing 10x10s has given me the confidence to pack lightly, knowing it is enough!
on the challenge: yes it is artificial – its a challenge (otherwise itd just be called “wearing clothes”). on laundry: i wouldnt usually go more than 10 days without doing at least one load of laundry, so its a bit of a non issue really. if its only 11 degrees (brrr!) then you’re probably not worried about your tops getting sweaty. if its hotter, then handwashing and drying the odd top thats too whiffy to rewear before laundry day will be easier. remember you dont have to count workout clothes or underwear (and i usually count baselayers as underwear if you cant see them). its all about what works for you. fun, and a bit of a challenge.
Hi Lee,
I just wanted to give you a heads up that I think the price on your micro rib tee might be incorrect. I don’t think it’s quite $100. Anyway, I’m excited as always to follow along!
Thanks Brittany! You’re right, it’s only $30 USD. I’ve updated that info and appreciate you pointing that out. xo
Great pieces! Beautiful as always.
What are your thoughts on “white wool coat”? I love the camel one you have.
I have a long black coat ( similar to your camel), and I also have a fur-rimmed hooded white wool jacket ( hits right below my bottom).
I guess I maybe answered my question: camel is a classic choice.?.
Thank you!
10×10 is going to be fun!
? ❤️
Thanks so much Patricia! It’s great to hear from you 🙂 Both your coats sound beautiful! I mean, I love the idea of a white wool coat but I would worry about it being a bit high maintenance. I’ve found the camel wool disguises so many things like flecks of dirt, small coffee spills, pet fur and more. I had it dry cleaned at the end of last season and it’s basically like new for this one. I would agree that camel is a timeless option for sure but if I stumbled on a vintage white wool coat I wouldn’t pass it up 🙂 Thanks for tuning in!
Hi Lee!
Super curious how this will go for you, since you only really have 2 stand-alone tops… Do you anticipate washing the white long-sleeve several times? This is always my challenge during the 10×10 because I prefer to only do laundry once a week. Happy styling!
Thanks Michelle! I know, it was a toss up between the coat and another sweater but I decided to go for the more challenging option. I do count the jumpsuit and the cashmere crew as tops though so I think I’ll be ok. I’ll wear the jumper under the cardigan and the crew can work on it’s own or over a base tank if needed. I’ll probably only wash the white tee once but I’ve saved some lights in my hamper for a full load. Are you joining this round? Xo
Don’t you guys think that the “10×10” concept is somewhat artificial and overly restrictive? Michelle is right – laundry should be allowed only once per week in this exercise. Therefore there should be at least five-six tops, assuming a 5-day working week. If so, it is OK to have a “12×10” or “15×10” capsule.
Hey there! I appreciate your note about laundry but I haven’t found it to be an issue in the past. If you include 5 tops (or 4 tops and a dress) you only need to wear each one twice and you can just hand wash and let them dry while you wear the others if you’re concerned about laundry needs. You can absolutely do a 12×10 or a 15×10 capsule if that feels more feasible too. It’s all about doing what works for you while still challenging yourself a bit 😉
