Style Bee - Fall 2016 Wish List

Thanks so much for the positive feedback on Monday’s post! I’m thrilled that so many of you are into this whole Fall Closet Prep idea and I really believe a few simple steps can help to ease our shopping anxiety and general style frenzy that can become a drain on both the brain and the wallet. Yay!

So now that we’re prepped, planned and our budget is set (no worries if not, you still have plenty of time) it’s time for the really fun stuff, which is deciding what’s going to make it’s way into our wardrobes. So if you’ll indulge me, I’ve got a few ideas for well considered additions to my personal repertoire!

Style Bee - Fall 2016 Wish List

My style focus this season is on finding a balance between RELAXED and REFINED. These are two words I keep gravitating to when I think about what I want to convey through my style and to feel when I’ve finished getting dressed each day. To me, each item on my wish list embodies both of these words while simultaneously being timeless and comfortable. I’ve actually managed to check off half my list already and the season is still weeks away, which is definitely the earliest I’ve ever prepared myself or my style in advance. I have a couple of well-timed sales and some long-standing wish list repeats to thank for that! I’ve also kept this list pretty lean, so as more collections launch I have room to add one or two items to it if I feel so inclined. But even if I was to stop shopping for the rest of the Fall, I’d be really quite content!

I should also say that being a style blogger has given me an opportunity to strategically partner with brands who’ve created pieces that would have otherwise been on this wish list. So stay tuned for some collabs that feature beautiful, responsibly made gems that have given my Fall closet and style a serious boost!

Until then, here’s what my consumerist instincts have convinced me that I need and what my closet has told me it wants.

Style Bee - Fall 2016 Wish List

1 – BLACK SKINNY JEANS – By no means is this an original wish list item. I’ve probably had over 10 pairs of skinny black jeans in the last 10 years and yet I’m always looking for that perfect pair. My requirements are that they be: High waisted but not too high waisted, skinny but not scary tight, long but not so long I need to cuff them, a deep rich black that doesn’t fade (at least not after 1 wash) and can we please keep the hardware neutral? Is this too much to ask I wonder? Time will tell, as always! These or these are currently my top contender.

2 – FITTED TURTLENECKS (Purchased) – I have indeed already snagged not 1 but 2 fitted turtlenecks by Splendid (made in USA). I put them in my Nordstrom cart about 1 month ago and checked on them every few days until I was feeling flush and ready to pull the trigger. I haven’t worn them for more than a few minutes but they feel like a dream and are pretty much exactly what I was looking for.

3 – JANESSA LEONE HAT (Purchased via Sample Sale) – If any of you have seen my hat wall, yes I have a hat wall (insert see no evil monkey emoji), you already know I don’t need any more hats. But this was not a need purchase, it was a want purchase and it was during a sweet ass Janessa Leone sample sale and it arrived a day later and fits like a dream. To be fair, I’m letting go of two of my hats to make up for it. Oh and also, JL hats are THE BEST.

4 – CAMEL SCARF – Again, not original, but also totally timeless. I am waiting to find the perfect one in some sort of luxurious alpaca or cashmere knit that I can wear forever. Of course Acne Studios makes a gem but I’m going to look for something handmade.

Style Bee - Fall 2016 Wish List

5 – BLACK MID-WEIGHT COAT (Purchased on Sale) – I really don’t know how I’ve managed to carry on in life without what is arguably the lifeblood of a modern closet. I was after something boyfriend-esque with a slim collar, long sleeves, button closure, pockets and a mid thigh length. I took a chance and ordered the Daryn Coat in Diplo from the Reformation Sale and I LOVE it. I’ll be getting the sleeves taken up slightly but otherwise the fit and quality of the fabric and construction are amazing. Full disclosure: I’ve shopped from Ref before and have returned every previous order.

6 – CHELSEA BOOTS – If you recall last winter’s wish list, these were on it and they’re back! Must be a sign of some sort so I’m seriously on the lookout for the perfect pair of classic black (or brown), flat (or heeled) chelsea boots. Acne Studios makes a cult favourite but Everlane makes a true classic and they’re currently in my cart.

7 – SWEET FRAMES – I’m blind, and not in a cute, ‘Here try my glasses on.‘ kind of way. In a ‘No, please do not try my glasses on because you might throw up.‘ kind of way. The only upside of not being able to see my own feet clearly is that I have an excuse to buy sweet frames every time my prescription declines and I dare says it’s that time of year! Squinting at you Garrett Leight.

8 – DUSTER (Purchased Second Hand) – You guys, remember when I said the Keaton Duster in Hemp Flax was one that got away? Well, the stars aligned and a lovely reader reached out to say she had the very vest I was after and was willing to part with it. The beauty is currently on it’s way to me now! If I hadn’t found this one something similar would be on the list.

Style Bee - Fall 2016 Wish List

And that’s that! My Fall wishlist adds up to be a little more than my initial budget (no surprise there) but I’ll see where I stand after the Style Bee Closet Sale (coming very soon!). I’m looking forward to transitioning quite a lot of my Spring favourites into the colder temps and will be working on a post to show how I’m styling things.

Style Bee - Fall 2016 Wish List

SO TELL ME, PLEASE! What’s on your wish list this Fall? I seriously LOVE to know what you stylish folks are eying!

    Hi Lee,
My wish list is on hold as I’m on a fast til the new year. I love discovering what pieces I’m wearing (and how) from my existing items after winnowing them down to 35 pieces. It’s such a fun exercise. I’m hoping to eventually go fabric shopping, haul out my sewing machine and add to my collection by hand. (It’s an achievable dream with a refined wardrobe!) Thank you for being a champion of the lean closet 🙂
I’d love to know where you get those little postcards printed of your wish list. They’re great.
    Thanks so much,
    KP

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hey KP! Good for you for fasting until the new year! That’s so impressive. I’d love to try my hand at making something next year, it was a goal for this year but just never happened with work and blog and life being stupidly busy.

The cards are Canon matte 4×6 photo stock you can buy at Staples. They’re usually in the printer section. LOVE them! xo

  2. Sally says:

Hey there! I’m wondering if you’ve had any luck with the camel scarf? I’m looking particularly for one that isn’t wool or polyester or all acrylic (wow I’m picky!) but I’m allergic to wool, and trying to stay away from synthetics.

Thanks for sharing your wish list! I look forward to reading more!

  3. I’m seriously obsessed with these items. I need a hat, too. One of the black variety because currently I’m at 0 count. Also looking for a flat brim for a more urban look. I also want a loose-fit Camel colored jacket to just “UP” a basic black/white look which I sport often. I have one in Olive (from Forever21) that’s actually pretty versatiles. So many more I’m sure, but I need this list to clean up and organize my lust list priorities! Haha, loved this. I’m just starting up my blog again so I was in need of some serious inspo and this was amazing. Thank you!

    Xx,
    JenLax

  4. Sara says:

On my Fall wishlist I’ve got a few things I’ve been lusting after a while: a loose, boxy top from Only Child, a pair of slim fit black wool/heavy cotton tailored black pants, always more sweaters, a similar scarf to the one you linked above in either camel or black, and some soft, silky underthings. I’ve neglected lingerie for most of my life, I’d like to change that in the coming 18 months or so, a few nice, quality pieces each season should do it, I hope!

  5. Michelle says:

The Citizens of Humanity rocket jean is wonderful as well. I feel like J Brand is very color fast and I prefer the unadorned pockets although they are definitely a tight skinny jean and more so in the Photo Ready wash BUT they feel amazing on. The AG tends to stretch out in the waist more in my experience. I BOUGHT THE DARYL COAT TOO in Frostbite. I had such good luck with ref 2 summers ago but have had to return everything since as well. Shopping in the store made all the difference in the world because the sizing is all over the place. This sale was just too good to pass up. This is getting long but I have a wonderful camel scarf from Heidi Wynne and they are handwoven in Nepal…I have had it a few years so I didn’t research their practices but it might be worth looking into.

  6. karine says:

I love the maria high rise jeans – they are a staple in my closet (I have the dark navy blue ones) & I would be slightly embarrassed at how often I wore them if they weren’t such a ‘comfort piece’ as such. I also bought madewell high rise skinny black jeans that I think fit similarly, though with a little less stretch and more structure to them but they faded after only a few washes (though that could be on me – I’m admittedly not a laundry whiz).
and let me know if you do find a camel scarf – it’s been on my to-buy list for ages. I scooped up a fantastic one from forever 21 that is exactly what I want in theory – large and oversized, great color – but provides no actual warmth and I’d like also to find one as you note that’s from a sustainable source.
we don’t really have a ‘winter’ here in texas but I still can’t resist wanting winter wear – and decided this is year I tackle the lack of black in my closet – I’ve got the acne Jensen boots (anyone have experience with these?), a black coat, two classic v-neck black sweaters, and black flats – a classic ballet? something more dressy?? And yes, I can’t wait to see what Elizabeth Suzann and First Rite come out with – I have buyer’s remorse for not snagging that fantastic sweater coat you got from them last year.

    • karine says:

ps. forgot to ask – why did you return everything from reformation? was it quality? sizing? I’ve been curious about their clothing but haven’t had a first had reference to ask – always an added bonus before purchasing something.

  7. Nicola says:

    Love your list!!

I have a few suggestions for scarves. Scarf Shop has a gorgeous option in their wool cloud scarf. The texture is amazing: http://www.scarf-shop.com/shop/wool-cloud

Also, while Atha doesn’t currently have any camel colored scarves, you might find something you like: http://atha.michellecherian.com

Both of these have gone on and off my wish list over the past year (sometimes really close) but I’m in love with my current scarf that’s a circle scarf I made out of wool jersey and have other more pressing closet needs (hello black pants).

  8. Julie says:

I loved reading the comments here. I’ll be going straight to Everlane to check out their cashmere sweaters – that’s top on my list. I’ve decided I need more cashmere in my life, especially for the warmth without bulk. That and a well fitting black turtle neck, which I’m a bit nervous about. Not sure how flattering they are on us bosomy folk…. Thoughts??
I scored earlier in the year at the local consignment store and found a great pair of J Crew jeans on the clearance rack that I’m excited to pull out, and the most perfect motorcycle jacket – almost the same as the one I’ve been coveting from Madewell for years – for next to nothing (well, comparatively)!! You can imagine how eager I am for dipping temps.
Thanks again for the amazing tips!
Ps I have had success with re-dying jeans in the past if anyone has a favorite pair that’s lost its lustre! Both black and super dark (key is two boxes of navy and one black)

    • Aleyna says:

Please tell me how you dye your pants! I have a pair of cecilias from ES and they are looking quite gray. ????

  9. Emily Mahi'ai says:

I JUST bought black skinnies last fall, and I loved them, but I gained a little weight this year (which I needed because I was underweight). I’m half happy that I’m a healthy weight and half irritated that I need a new pair of black skinnies, haha. Have you bought any from Rag and Bone before? Considering a pair to replace the old ones. Also considering J Brands.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hey Emily! Ah, I’ve been there, actually the pair of skinnies I mentioned replacing are from Rag and Bone, and I loved them but they’res just a little too tight unless I’m having a particularly ‘skinny’ day. I’m selling them in my closet sale (size 25 that runs like a small 26) in case that’s something you might want to try. They are in great condition and still a super deep black. I have another pair of Rag and Bone high rise skinnies in a dark wash and they are great, I just find the seam on the outside my right leg wants to turn inward. So weird.

JBRAND is probably my made in USA denim favourite however there have been some suggestions to try Industry Standard and AG below. Hope that helps! Glad you’re feeling good lady! xo

    • Emily Mahi'ai says:

Oh, thank you! I’d definitely be interested in buying those off of you. I tend to run between a 24 and 26, so those would probably fit perfectly.

  10. Thuy says:

Everlane’s Chelsea Boot is on my list for this fall’s must-have shoe. I currently don’t own a flat heeled boot besides riding boots so they are a must for me! Only problem is the Chelsea is out of my size (7) and I have to wait until November. I know the Modern Chelsea is available in 7 but I think I prefer the look of the regular better. And I agree, Everlane’s Chelsea style is TRUELY a classic.

    http://www.dressupchowdown.com

    • Lee the Bee says:

Ah, that’s frustrating but I know they often restock sooner than the expected date so don’t lose hope! I’m sure they’re worth the wait though. Thanks for reading Thuy! xo

  11. Andrea H says:

This is great Lee! I love how simple this list is, and it definitely hits your target of relaxed and refined. Very nice! I’m looking forward to seeing your cooler weather styles and how you transition your spring pieces. I’m trying to figure out how to transition mine as well – without looking too much like a hillbilly. ????

Per the black jeans, I have a pair by Paige denim that I got a few years ago, and they are still a nice, inky black. And they’re the perfect midrise fit. I think they’re called the Skyline Skinny.

    Happy hunting!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hahaha your hillbilly comment is too good! I totally know what you mean though. The challenge is real!
Great tip on Paige denim, I’ve only heard positive things about that brand! Thanks Andrea! xo

  12. Allison says:

Hi Lee – I love your wishlist! The Keaton Duster was on my list as well and I’m so jealous you found one! I’m on the hunt for a similar style or fingers crossed I can find one secondhand as well! Can’t wait to see how you style it!
I also have the AG black skinnies in my closet and second the recommendation from Alexis. I’ve had mine for a little over a year now and the color has survived multiple washes with no fading!
    xo – Allison

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks so much Allison! I’m sure ES will release a sweet Fall version of the duster so fear not!

Great to know the AG skinnies are a good option. Appreciate the tip! xo

  13. Elle says:

Just wanted to pop in with a jeans suggestion– I know J Brand is the fave du jour of fashion girls, but I prefer Industry Standard, which are made in LA and have the perfect high rise for me! I have the Margot’s, but the Simone’s seem to be everyone’s favorite! (Plus, for jeans the price tag is fairly reasonable IMO).

    http://shop.industrystandardny.com/products/the-simone-highrise

    • Lee the Bee says:

Really appreciate the suggestion Elle! I’ve been intrigued by IS for a while and have heard really good things about their denim. Will have to investigate further. I agree, the price point is totally fair. Wish they shipped to Canada but it looks like they might make exceptions 🙂 xo

  14. Jodie says:

Another wonderfully done lean closet post!
I went over my closet again with Monday’s post and couldn’t be more pleased. I have a lot more gaps than I’d like (you know because of what happened last year), but am limiting myself to 3-4 ethically made items a season. Will print off and use today’s list too. I said more on Instagram to you.
Have a great week, and enjoy the last month of summer! Xo!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks girl, I think that’s such a good approach Jodie and I truly admire your willpower! So glad you’re heading into the season feeling good about your options, isn’t it so refreshing? xo

  15. Katrina says:

    Lee,
This fall I’m missing some true, high quality classics. On my list are:
    -the perfect black trouser
-white silk equipment shirt (purchased 2nd hand)
-white shirtdress that is completely opaque, simple and long enough (I’m 5’10”)
    -repetto camilles
    -everlane modern loafer
-wool trench coat in camel or grey
-Navy v-neck cashmere sweater (purchased used)

Now, I know I can find a lot of these items second hand or at good prices, I just really want to take my time and not just buy the first good deal I see and get something that’s only ok. I have about 5 pairs of black trousers, and couple shirtdresses but they just aren’t the “ones.” Any recommendations on trousers (not skin tight) and a quality wool coat to last for years? (I need something a little heavier than yours shown above)

    Kat

    • Lee the Bee says:

Great list Katrina! All timeless staples that I’m sure you’ll get a ton of use out of.

I know Everlane has some great trouser options but I haven’t tried any on personally. That would be the first place I’d look, in particular at these. I also think Eileen Fisher has some great trouser options right now (these caught my eye).

As for heavy winter coats, that’s something on my Winter closet list. I’m waiting to see what Elizabeth Suzann comes out with and I’m sure there will be a lot more options as we get into Sept. and Oct. xo

    • Alix says:

I just bought a J.Crew white shirtdress (purchased secondhand from Poshmark) that checks all those boxes, except that it isn’t opaque enough to be worn on its own but does come with a matching slip. The best part is it’s actually sewn shut at the bottom hem in the front, so no fear of flashing anyone!

  16. Alexis says:

Great list, Lee! I love hearing about what other people are shopping for.

I actually purchased the black AG skinnies during the Nordstrom anniversary sale and I have to say they are nearly perfect! Perfect high waist, thick enough material, jet black (havnt washed yet so can’t say much about fading), just too long on me. I’m only 5’3″ though so hemming is expected anytime I buy denim.

My fall wardrobe is pretty set but I’m still looking for a couple more peices. I’d been eyeing a short sleeve ribbed olive turtleneck from Reformation but they were out of my size so still looking. The Everlane cashmere crew in grey has been on my list for quite some time so I’ll definitely be purchasing it soon. Did you stick with your normal size or size up? I want a slightly relaxed fit so was considering sizing up from a small to a medium.

Also, saving some room in my budget for your closet sale!

Thanks for the great post Lee!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks Alexis! So appreciate the feedback on those AG skinnies, I have had them in my cart for ages but haven’t taken the plunge. I might have to now!

I have the cashmere crew in a small (my usual size) and a medium and both fit great but the M is definitely more relaxed. I like it better for layering over other tops. Here is an example of it on for reference. xo

    • Alix says:

I was also going to recommend the AG ones! I’ve had them since last winter and have washed and dried them many times with no fading. The AG store in Soho will also hem them for free if needed.

  17. Lauren says:

Such a great wishlist!! I’ve got my eye on a black turtleneck from People Tree, some dark wash skinny jeans, a couple of Everlane tops, and some ankle boots! I’m really enjoying your fall prep posts!
    -Lauren

  18. Alex Chua says:

This is a great list, Lee. Last fall I purchased an Eileen Fisher black turtleneck that I lived in all winter long and basically wondered why I’d never purchased one before. I also decided that while I love jeans, I’ve yet to find a pair that I find truly comfortable and opted for black, form fitting khakis instead. So far, so good.
On my wish list for fall are a cozy black cardigan that doesn’t weight a lot, a cocoon or kimono coat, a neutral wool hat, a pink top, and a simple black tee or shirt. Haven’t had much success so far, but I’m not willing to pull the trigger on anything until I see what ES and Han Starnes are coming out with.
    X

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks so much Alex! It’s great when you find a closet hero like that! I hear you on the jeans thing, it’s tricky, but I’m determined to find a good black option. Your list sounds great and totally manageable. I find so often, when you look at the items on the list they end up making some great outfits!

I’m waiting patiently for ES too and good call on Han Starnes! I loved their SS16 collection but haven’t shopped from them before. Allllmost bought the Rain Top though!

Ps. Thanks again for the Vest hook up 😉 xo

  19. Lia says:

Great list, Lee! I feel like I have a lot more gaps than you, so I’m in limbo until some more fall collections are released.

For jeans, have you come across Industry Standard? I found them via the Instagram rabbit hole, but haven’t tried them yet. They have a pair of black skinnies. I’d be interested in how they compare to your yoga jeans and AYRs if you try them.
    http://shop.industrystandardny.com/products/the-simone-highrise

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks Lia! I felt like I had a lot more gaps last Fall so I know what you mean. You’re doing the right thing by waiting for sure.

Great suggestion! I have heard of Industry Standard and love what they’re up to as well. They don’t ship to Canada at this time either so I’m in a bit of a pickle! haha Might get in touch with them and see if they can make an exception 😉 xo

    • Lia says:

Ooooh that’s a bummer about shipping. Have you ever tried those companies that ship things in bulk in other countries? I can’t remember any of the names, but I’ve seen lots of mentions on instagram for folks who live in Europe or Australia and want to try American brands. I’d also be happy to ship to you from NYC if you wanted! I live near UPS and FedEx.

    • Lee the Bee says:

You are so sweet! Thanks for the offer, I might just take you up on it but I’ll see if I can’t pull some blogger strings before I pester you 😉 xo

  20. Emm says:

For fall (and winter) I would love to add a chunky oversized cardigan (grey or beige), a black cashmere sweater and also a winter dress in Camel or olive color (not sure yet) to my wardrobe. I will also need a new belt (mine is almost dead…) and a new wool wintercoat. I would like either a black one ou something like a colorblock one with camel/black or grey/black

  21. Kelsey says:

Hi Lee! Have you tried AYR’s black skinny jeans? I’ve loved mine, although I purchased the regular rise. They do offer a high-rise these days that might interest you. https://www.ayr.com/products/hi-rise-skinny#17183329670 Best of luck!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hey Kelsey! Thanks for the suggestion, I have them in Jaguar Legs and LOVE them but I got them through a PR campaign but they don’t ship to Canada usually 🙁 I just might try to pull a few strings though. So glad you mentioned those! xo
