SOFTNESS & TEXTURE

I’d thought other linen bedding I have was soft, and I still do, but these are supremely soft and almost silky on the skin. Not even the least bit scratchy or rough thanks to the stonewashing process. I did wash them prior to our first sleep (as is recommended for all bedding) and they came out of the dryer looking beautiful. Honestly, they’re even softer than my most worn Florence linen pants, which I’ve washed countless times over the years.

The texture is a quintessentially linen, with a lived in look and feel. It can be seen in more detail below.

TEMPERATURE REGULATION

We’ve been using these sheets since early February and they are super cozy even in very cold weather. Now that the nights aren’t as cold I find they’re adjusting nicely. Time will tell how they perform in the heat of summer.

DESIGN DETAILS

I always appreciate thoughtfully simple design details and Sömn offers those through discrete button closures on the duvet and an envelope style closure on the pillow cases (both shown below).

I’ve now had the experience of a duvet that closes with a zipper (ie: snag central), and one that stays closed with ties (ie: a built-in cat toy that is likely to come undone). While buttons are a bit finicky when putting the cover on and removing it, Sömn has used sleek, clear buttons that glide through the reinforced holes easily. These stay closed throughout the use of the cover without letting the duvet insert peek out.

HOW DOES SÖMN COMPARE TO FLAX SLEEP?

I previously reviewed Flax Sleep here and yes, Sömn linens ring in at a considerably higher price point. This is in large part due to the fact that Sömn linens are grown, dyed and sewn in Europe, with a premium standard of care taken to ensure sustainable practices and an extremely high caliber finished product. Flax Sleep is manufactured in Guangdong, China and the brand doesn’t offer much in terms of production transparency so it’s hard to say exactly how the process compares.

When comparing the feel of the two brands, there is a discernible difference. Flax Sleep feels great and it has been continuing to soften with use, however, Sömn linens feel amazing right away. It’s so soft and smooth to the touch. Sömn linen is also a thicker weight, so I expect they’ll stand up to use for longer and resist wear in heavy use spots (a factor for folks who toss and turn or have restless legs ie: my partner).

That being said, I think both brands are excellent options depending on your budget. If yours allows, I don’t think you’ll regret investing more in Sömn. The brand has gone above and beyond to offer a premium linen product. You essentially feel like you’re sleeping in a 5 star B&B in the Cotswolds.

IF I COULD CHANGE ANYTHING?

I would love the option to choose two colours in a bedding set, although I appreciate this is a logistical hurdle for inventory. As much as I love the Natural colour I chose, I would have liked to mix up the flat and fitted sheet colour or the duvet and pillow colours.

Reimagined the Eco Bath Towel

Frederik and Julie were determined to source the best in the world and Sömn’s eco-friendly cotton and bamboo collection is made in Japan by a certified Imabari towel manufacturer.

I wasn’t familiar with the city of Imabari, Japan, known as the town of towel sommeliers, or the extremely high standards that Imabari textiles must pass, such as the 5-second rule.

“Genuine Imabari towels have to meet strict standards. One of the most interesting is the five-second rule where a drop of water is placed on the towel. If the droplet is not absorbed in 5-seconds, the towel does not pass for high absorbency, one of the key characteristics of an Imabari towel. Only a manufacturer that passes this test (and several others) will qualify as a certified Imabari towel producer.”

These towels are unlike any I’ve used before, even at the most luxurious hotels I’ve had the privilege of staying in. They are incredibly soft, yet, highly absorbent, even after just a single wash. At the same time they’re much lighter than a typical terry towel and dry quickly before their next use.

I also love the unique shape that Sömn has designed them in, which is slightly slimmer and longer than the typical towel. In my experience, this makes them easier to use and wear. Both the organic cotton and bamboo towels come in the following three sizes:

Bath Towel – 28.5” x 57” (72x145cm)
Hand Towel – 14” x 31” (35x80cm)
Wash Cloth – 14” x 14” (35x35cm) 

These are just simply not your average bath towels. After years of using either thin, scratchy Turkish towels (that took 100 washes to become useful) or massive terry towels that take forever to dry, these are an absolute delight to use. I can’t wait to wash my face at night or hop out of the shower now that we have the luxury of these beauties! Even my partner Dave, who’s very picky about towels, concurs that they’re the best he’s ever used.
