Style Bee - Jamie + The Jones - Pants + Haori Review

J+J – WIDE LEG PANTS + HAORI

08.29.18

I hope you’re having a great week so far and you’re ready to explore some new palettes and outfits here on Style Bee. I’m thrilled to be sharing a collaboration with one of my favourite responsible brands, Jamie + The Jones! If you’re a long-time reader you might remember this post in early 2016 when I first introduced the brand to the blog. Since then, J + J pieces have been steadfast closet heroes for me and their cult following has become a sensation across the world of responsible style.

If you’re not familiar with Jamie + the Jones then I’m glad to be able to introduce you to the incredible duo that is Jamie Frazier + Hannah Jones, founders and masterminds behind the Nashville based clothing brand. I’ll borrow Jamie and Hannah’s own description of their work, which among many things involves, “Creating simple, wearable art to live in. Refreshing Colors. Relaxed structure. Versatile elements. An effortless, everyday statement.” and this couldn’t be more true!

I’m excited to be teaming up again today to celebrate the launch of their new and improved Wide Leg Pant and brand new Haori both available in their legendary raw silk and a range of 15 gorgeous colour options! So let’s dig into these two items and the 6 looks I put together using my past favourites from J+J and some of my other closet favourites.

1. WIDE LEG PANT

Style Bee - J+J Wide Leg Pant + Haori Jacket

QUICK FACTS

First up we have the Wide Leg Pant in Umberwhich had actually been on my ‘dream pant’ wish list long before they were a reality. I’d almost ordered a black pair of these so many times since they were released last Fall but I’m glad I waited until the new design and full range of colours was released. I had been desperate for a pair of raw silk pants in this wide-leg silhouette and these have really answered that call for me. I’ve worn them 5 times since they arrived last week and can already see how they’ll be playing a starring role in my Fall closet. Now onto the facts!

MADE RESPONSIBLY IN: Nashville by the Jamie + the Jones team of talented seamstresses.

PRICE: $240 USD $204 USD with ‘STYLEBEE15’

  • SAVE 15% ON ANY J+J RAW SILK STYLES WITH ‘STYLEBEE15’ NOW THROUGH SEPTEMBER 12th.

COLOUR OPTIONS: Available in all 15 raw silk colours! I am wearing UMBER, which I would describe as a rusty, cinnamon with a hint of pumpkin. Colours in these photos are as accurate as possible but may appear different depending on your screen.

FABRIC: 100% Raw Silk which is extremely soft on the skin with a nubbly texture and cozy feel. It starts beautiful and just gets better the more you wear it! Raw silk has a more casual feel than crepe but is more refined than a cotton or jersey so it can be easily dressed up or down. All J+J fabric is pre-washed + shrunken to ensure quality and care standards.

WRINKLE FACTOR: If you’re familiar with raw silk you’ll likely agree that it is much less prone to creasing than crepe silk. It’s also slightly heavier and warmer than a typical silk or cotton and falls beautifully with lots of great movement. I find raw silk is similar to a mid-weight cotton in terms of how easily it wrinkles, meaning, it is quite resistant to creases, however if left in a heap or tightly folded, it will crease. For general day-to-day wear it is one of my favourites!

I steamed these pants smooth once they arrived but ended up wearing them around the office for a few hours before shooting and they didn’t crease much at all. I was sitting, crouching, up and down stairs and not even thinking about it! If you’re able to hang them in your closet, instead of folding, they’ll stay perfect and wrinkles will fall out over night in most cases too. I still haven’t had to steam them again after several days of wear.

CARE: You have the option to care for your raw silk three ways:

  • 1 | Dry Clean | If you’d like your garment to remain exactly like new this is your best bet.
  • 2 | Hand Wash | This is another option to keep your raw silk pieces as new as possible. Simply hand wash cold with mild detergent. Air dry and steam smooth as needed.
  • 3 | Machine Wash Separately | Of course, you can also machine wash your J+J raw silk on cold with mild detergent and either air dry and steam or tumble dry on low. Please note: this method may cause colour fading, mild streaking and relax the silhouette and seems.

All J+J Raw Silk garments come with a detailed care card that will give you all the info you need to make sure your garments last a long time as well as lots of tips and treats to deal with stains and to keep the fabric feeling like new. If you’d like to see what’s on it have a look right here.

Personally, I machine wash my J+J silk pieces, air dry and steam smooth. I have not noticed any streaking but the colours have faded ever so slightly and that’s fine with me. You can compare today’s post with this one to see how well the colour, shape and fabric has help up over the last 2.5 years.

WARMTH: I think these pants will be wonderful for the Fall and I definitely plan to wear them into the Winter with knee socks and boots. They’ll also be great for the Spring and cooler Summer temperatures. They’re warmer than a linen or tencel but not has heavy or itchy as wool or dense as cotton canvas.

DESIGN DETAILS

The Wide Leg Pant has been updated from the original design for an improved fit, increased comfort and optimal versatility. Here are the four key elements that make them special in my opinion:

1 | POCKETS: You might know that I’m not normally a pockets person but in this case I’ll make an exception. These actually lay flat, without bulging out like crazy as you walk and move. They’re also quite deep so they add a bit of smoothing structure the front of the pants, similar to the large pockets in vintage jeans.

2 | ELASTIC BACK:  If you wore a uniform in school, like I did, you might remember the junior pant sizes having elastic back waist bands and how graduating to no elastic was a big event haha. But now I’m ever so glad to be back into that elastic life! Hello comfort and forgiveness when it comes to a large lunch or just those days when you need a little extra give!

3 | SIDE ZIPPER: If I didn’t know this zipper was there I might have tried pulling these straight on, which would not have gone so well. The zipper is an integral detail and makes it super easy to pull them on, ie: no shimmy-ing or hopping around to hike them up over your hips. Plus it makes tucking tops in a breeze! I really appreciate how discrete it is and that it adds function without detracting from the simplicity of the pant.

4 | FLAT FRONT: I love the clean, simple profile of the front of these pants. It’s polished and brings their sophistication up a notch compared to a fully elastic waistband.

See below for more details on fit/sizing.

WIDE LEG PANT FIT DETAILS

FIT FACTS:

  • High Waist – 12 inch Rise – Sits just below the natural waist
  • Slim through hip, wide through leg
  • 25 inch Inseam – Slightly cropped on me

MY SIZE: SMALL

My info for reference: I am wearing a size Small with no alterations and the fit is just how I would have hoped. I am about 5’7.5, with a relatively long leg to torso ratio. I weigh about 125 lbs and typically wear either a 26 or 27 in denim or a 4 in most pants. My natural waist is 26 in and my low hip is 37 in.

J+J SIZE GUIDE: The Jamie + The Jones sizing has always been pretty dependable for me but be sure to refer to their comprehensive guide for all the measurements you might find helpful.

PERSONAL PROS + CONCERNS

PROS:

UNIQUE: These pants are unlike any other pair in my closet (or that I’ve seen available) thanks to their gorgeous colour and special raw silk fabric. I’m so happy to be able to expand my colour palette in pants and broaden the existing options within my closet.

COMFORT: They are SO comfy it’s kind of absurd! You will see what I mean if you try them. I could easily trade in all my sweatpants for these and never miss them. Yet, they’re so elegant and fabulous that they’re a total showstopper in any outfit.

FIT: I am a huge fan of how these pants fit. The waistband could not be more forgiving thanks to the elastic but it’s also very flattering thanks to the clean, simple front design. The leg flares out gently without feeling like you’re swimming in them and the 1/5 inch hem helps them fall straight and creates a clean horizontal line at the ankle.

CONCERNS:

DURABILITY: I am quite certain that I’ll have these pants for many years to come but I am not totally sure how the raw silk will hold up to friction and rubbing since I’ve only worn it in tops previously. If they were tighter fitting I might be more concerned but because they’re quite loose and soft I think that will help. I also appreciate that the nubbly texture on raw silk does wear off over time. I’ll be curious to see how they hold up!

LENGTH: For me this is not an issue but I appreciate that tailoring is a bit of a hassle for those who may need it. It would be awesome if they were offered in different inseam lengths (even just short, reg and tall) but at the same time, they should be easy enough to have hemmed if needed. J+J have expressed that they’d consider that offering for the future!

So those are my thoughts on the J+J Wide Leg Pants! Please feel free to ask any questions about these pants in the comments below. Now let’s look at the three looks I put together!

I won’t be going into any styling details today but this won’t be the last time you see these so I’ll share more tips next time.

2. HAORI JACKET

Style Bee - J+J Wide Leg Pant + Haori Jacket

QUICK FACTS

(Mostly the same as the Wide Leg Pant)

Originally this post was going to focus on the Wide Leg Pant but when Jamie and Hannah asked if I’d be able to share my thoughts on the Haori I couldn’t resist the opportunity. I’d swooned over their Raw Silk Jacket from previous seasons so I was delighted to try this new rendition in person. Here are some quick facts and keep reading for the key details and my personal pros and concerns.

MADE RESPONSIBLY IN: Nashville, TN by the Jamie + the Jones team of talented seamstresses.

PRICE: $240 USD $204 USD with ‘STYLEBEE15’

  • SAVE 15% ON ANY J+J RAW SILK STYLES WITH ‘STYLEBEE15’ NOW THROUGH SEPTEMBER 12th.

COLOUR OPTIONS: Available in all 15 raw silk colours! I am wearing NATURAL, which I would describe as an ecru, cream or ivory.

• 3 | Machine Wash Separately | Of course, you can also machine wash your J+J raw silk on cold with mild detergent and either air dry and steam or tumble dry on low. Please note: this method may cause colour fading, mild streaking and relax the silhouette and seems.

WARMTH: This jacket is a perfect layer for in between seasons and on cool summer nights. Depending on how you layer, I think it will be great for temperatures between 12 and 22 degrees celsius.

SHEERNESS: As you can see in photos below I’m wearing it over dark colours and light colours and it is quite opaque with little to no show-through.

SIZE: I am wearing a size Small and I’m about 5’7.5 and 125 lbs for reference.

Style Bee - J+J Wide Leg Pant + Haori Jacket

DETAILS

1 | LENGTH: I love this jacket length and how it falls just a couple of inches down the leg and below the seat (that was my classy attempt at avoiding the word butt ha!). It’s quite similar in length to both the Clyde Jacket and the Cardiff Work Coat, however, it falls closer to the body because the raw silk does not have the same volume as linen or cotton canvas.

2 | SIMPLE NECKLINE: I love that J+J kept the neckline clean and simple on this piece. No collars or lapels or extra details needed. Design restraint when it comes to maintaining simple shapes is something that they do so well. This simple collar will work with a myriad of different base tops from wide necklines (like the Blank Canvas Top I’m wearing) to crew-necks to turtlenecks to collared shirts, you name it and it will layer no prob.

3 | ROLLABLE SLEEVES: I always like to have the option to roll my cuffs and wasn’t sure if this raw silk would let me do that but to my delight is holds a rolled cuff very well! The sleeves left long are a nice length too. Just slightly cropped above the wrist so they don’t get in the way. See Outfit 2 for unrolled sleeves.

4 | CONVENIENT POCKETS: I like the size of the pockets on the Haori because they’re not to huge but they’re plenty big enough to toss in a phone and a credit card if you don’t feel like dragging a purse around. I prefer an interior pocket like this one to a patch pocket that’s sewn onto the outside of the jacket. It just feels a bit more clean and polished, especially when on a piece as lean as this one.

5 | DROP SHOULDER: I love a sharp shoulder in my blazers but a drop shoulder (aka dolman sleeve) works best for more relaxed fitting pieces like this one. It will easily slide on over any wide sleeve base like the Blank Canvas Top or T Top, which makes it great for layering.

PERSONAL PROS AND CONCERNS

PROS:

GOOD FOR LOTS OF BODY TYPES | The Haori will work on a wide range of body-types and sizes. Even if you’re quite petite the raw silk falls close to the frame so it won’t swallow you up the way a canvas or linen might. The sleeves being slightly cropped in length and rollable helps too!

VERY VERSATILE | This jacket is a great layering piece thanks to the easy fit and its simple design. These factors make it the type of piece you can throw on over any base whether it’s jeans and a tee or a silk dress and expect it to work with whatever the style or vibe is. It’ll be super cute over a dress with a big scarf, tights and boots when it’s cold out but looks lovely over shorts and a simple tank right now. It can lean quite casual to take on the role of a robe or even a cardigan sweater thanks to the soft raw silk that moves so fluidly.

CONCERNS:

LINT | I haven’t noticed this with any of my previous J+J Silk pieces but this piece has left some lint on darker clothing. I suspect this will lessen with use as the fibres slough off and smooth out over time.

SIMILAR TO PIECES I HAVE | You know I love a good jacket but I am trying my best not to add them just for the sake of it. I already have a couple of light jacket options in this colour range so I will see how well this one gets worn over the upcoming months. If it’s not a top player in my wear counts I will consider finding it a new home. So far it’s been worn several times since it arrived, despite us having yet another heat wave!

So those are my thoughts on the lovely J+J Haori. Please feel free to ask any questions about this piece in the comments below. Now let’s peruse the three looks I put together starring the Raw Silk Haori!

Leave me a comment here!

  1. Tess says:

Thanks so much for this review! I’m considering buying these pants but it’s surprisingly hard to find reviews for them that aren’t on J+J’s site.
I know this is an old post, but I’m curious how they’ve held up and if you still find yourself reaching for them as much?

  2. Hanusia says:

I love these looks and the color combos you’ve chosen! I must say though, the Haori in white looks so much like a lab coat to me- the chicest lab coat out there, to be sure, but still! Lol.

  3. Tanya says:

    Hi Lee,

I’m curious about why you chose size Small for the Wide Leg Pant. Per Jamie + the Jones sizing, you’d be an Extra Small. Can you speak a bit more to your decision to go with a size Small? I’m also a 26-27 waist, so I’m just curious about how to choose my own sizing 🙂 Thank you!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hey Tanya! I was going by the past sizing chart when I chose but I’d still go for the size I got. I always go for the widest measurement and choose the size that will fit that best. So in this case my hips are a 37 and to avoid the pant being too slim the small makes the most sense. The waist band is perfect on the small on me and my waist is 26-27 (depending on the meal I just had haha). I hope that helps!

  4. Nancy says:

Hi, in many of the photos of the Haori jacket the front corners seem to swing inward, hanging close together, and almost touching. Is this due to styling for the photo shoot? While wearing it throughout the day, would you say the jacket hangs more open with the corners more relaxed and straight down? Also, I have a T Top in umber, emerald, and sand. What color jacket would you recommend?

    • Lee the Bee says:

Good question Nancy! Due to the cut of the jacket the front edges/pockets tend to curve inward rather than falling straight down. It also depends where you position the shoulder seams and back of the neckline since it falls more open when those elements are worn further back. I think the natural would look really lovely with all the colours you have in the T Top! Hope that helps and you’re having a great weekend. xo

  5. Jen says:

This looks amazing. How would you say they compare to the Florence silk crepe trousers from Elizabeth Suzann? Is the fabric thicker? What is the tucking situation like between these two? I’ve been eyeing a navy pair of Flos for ages but the flat front on these just make them look so stylish, and I’m not sure I’m brave enough for the full elastic waist yet.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks Jen! I would say these are a bit roomier in the leg than the Florence and the raw silk is thicker than the crepe silk, otherwise the fit and feel is similar. Tucking things into both pants is fairly easy but the zipper on these makes it even easier. I know what you mean about the full elastic. I am used to it now but this design approach feels a bit more polished and can lean more towards a trouser vibe depending on what you pair them with. I hope that helps! xo

  6. Kirra says:

These pants look amazing Lee! Thanks for your in-depth review and letting me know about another great brand of clothes. Unfortunately I won’t be getting any at the moment as I’m just about to go back to university for a year but I’ll add them to my list for when I’m back at work. (Saying they are as comfy as sweatpants really sold me!) Also love the white t-shirt, is that the one your wore for your last 10×10? Thanks for your great blog!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks for reading Kirra! Yes, that is the Organic Tee from Miakoda. It has quickly become my go-to basic white tee 🙂 Good luck with your upcoming year of school, how exciting!

  7. Joanna says:

These look great! I was wondering if you could share a little about the pilling of the fabric? From the photos on J+J website, it looks like there’s some pilling on the fabric. Do their pieces come like this? Or is it a wear&tear type of thing? How has your older pieces held up?

    Thanks!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hi Joanna, Thanks for reading and good question! Raw silk has a nubbly texture, which might look a bit like pilling at first but it’s finer and more consistent across the material. It will gradually wear off over time but it’s part of the character of the fabric. The more you wear and wash the pieces the smoother they get. It might be hard to tell from the photos but my green top and black are not as nubbly anymore but they’ve held up very well over the last 2+ years. I hope that helps!

  8. Carol says:

All of these pieces are beautiful, Lee. I’m picking look 6 as my favorite.

  9. Raquel says:

I love those pants! But I’m also considered about how they’ll deal w/friction/rubbing. I bike commute most days. Any thoughts on whether casual biking in these would completely destroy them?

    • Lee the Bee says:

Good question! I think you’d be fine with casual biking but if your commute is long it’s probably not the best scenario as I think the repetitive rubbing motion would probably be tough on the inner thigh area. I saw a comment thread on the J+J instagram today between the brand and Shannon Buckley (@shannydoots who had similar concerns) and that was helpful. You can check it out here. Sounds like they’ve left a considerable amount of room in the leg to avoid excess rubbing. Hope that helps and thanks for reading!

  10. Nat says:

So excited about this! I want to live in raw silk. Raw. Silk. EVERYTHING! ?
Just ordered myself an umber haori jacket! I think it’ll go with everything and provide a nice pop of colour to jeans or black pants or light skirts and dresses!
J+J are so great! Now i just need them to start making long open vests and frill midi skirts out of raw silk and my wardrobe will be set for life.
Thanks for another great detailed review!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Haha Nat you’re a woman after my own heart! I am so glad you went for an Umber Haori, that is going to be gorgeous for Fall! Okay, duster vests in raw silk…DREAM item. Thanks for reading and supporting J+J, they are really up so something special! xo

  11. Kris says:

Love both pieces – and was about to ask you if you still wear your t-midweight sweater when you answered that question for me!
    Beautiful styling.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thanks so much Kris! I haven’t worn it much this summer since it’s been so hot but I’m excited to get it back into rotation this Fall 🙂

  12. Emily Mahi’ai says:

Not a pockets person?! Ya weirdo. ;P jk jk.
Those pants are SO GOOD and you seriously rocked styling them.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Haha I know! 😛 I am very finicky about them but when they’re good I’m down. Plus, I can always use a spot for dog treats! Thanks so much Emily!

  13. Sarah Brodeur-Campbell says:

Love the pants! I own a vintage silk Japanese haori and this gives me some good ideas for wearing it!

So glad you had the opportunity to review these items. Over the past month or so, I have been pondering over the Clyde jacket and the Cardiff work jacket, but have been a little concerned about the stiffness of the fabric and how it falls from the body. I am somewhat petite at 5’3, but have a thick waist so belting isn’t really comfortable (or flattering) for me. Then when J+J previewed this Haori jacket on Instagram, I was smitten! It looks beautiful and I love hearing your thoughts on it.

One quick question about the Haori, will it layer ok under a winter coat? The raw silk looks as though it should, but it is an important detail for me because I will probably wear it a lot in the winter when a coat is mandatory!

With the discount I may have to jump on it, it helps to balance out our sad sad Canadian dollar and duties. Those pants are also to die for! And they look really great on you.

Thanks so much for reading Brenda! I just tested it out under my wool peacoat (this is it here), which is relaxed in fit but not terribly oversized and the Haori layers well. The sleeves take a bit of prep but then they’re all good.

I like to pull one side of the cuff as far out as I can and then wrap it around my arm. this create a slim sleeve and then I hold the cuff as I pull on my coat and repeat on the other side. This helps to stop bunching and wrinkles in the elbow and shoulder. I hope that helps!

  15. Love your outfit ideas! My favorite pieces are the natural Hoari jacket, umber pants, and sweater. Plus, the chocolate boots are to die for. The discount is encouraging me to make a purchase. Thanks!

Gorgeous! These aren’t in my budget for now, but perhaps in the future…

For the Haori jacket, I’m curious if you tried layering it over a T-Top? I’ve found it a little challenging to wear a topper over, but the sleeve styles seem similar between the two. I’m also wondering how raw silk layers over itself – like if it creates bunching or friction underneath.

    Thanks for your in-depth insight!

Thanks for tuning in Krystal! To answer your great questions:

1 – Yes, I tried the T Top under the Haori and it layers no problem. I know what you mean about the arms being a little bit wide for layering but the Haorio is ideal.
2 – Raw silk layers take a bit of adjusting at first, just to make sure the two items are sitting how you want but then they stay in place very well. They don’t glide over each other the way crepe silk does but if both pieces are loose there is still lots of movement. I didn’t find that the haori was clinging to the pants or causing static.

I hope that helps for future reference! xo
