10 WARM OUTFITS FOR EARLY SPRING

03.24.22

It’s always fun to daydream about spring style, however, over the years I’ve learned (the hard way) not to let myself get too carried away with the spring weather I imagine. At least here in Ontario, it’s never quite as warm or magical as the internet would have us expect.

I’ve been getting lots of requests for spring style ideas and before I start sharing new looks, I wanted to revisit my favourites from last year. I would gladly repeat all of these, especially knowing that they were up to the task this time last year too.

It was bittersweet to remember how many of these outfits I wore on my daily walks with Dobby. He always got me out of the house, no matter the weather, and my closet owes much of its functionality to him. Whenever I find an old treat in my pocket I’ll be reminded of those special times.

Read on for 10 warm & chic early spring looks to put on your outfit planning radar.

LOOK 1

Spring in Ontario rarely arrives without a significant amount of rain. Last year I created a Rainwear Capsule and having a few outfits at the ready has made life on dreary days much easier to dress for.

Early spring days are special because it means I get to bring my treasured sweater coats out of hibernation.

I love the textures in this look and the minimal palette of taupe, charcoal, and black, with a peek of white at the neckline.

I bought this sweater vest on a bit of an impulse but it’s turned out to be a secret weapon in my transitional style. I love the wide fit for easy layering and cropped length because it creates a high visual midpoint.

Here are three looks I’ve styled with it:

This look is the same as the first sweater vest look with two simple swaps. The first being a white button up shirt instead of a turtleneck and the second being a chunky taupe boot instead of a sleek black boot.

HOUNDSTOOTH COAT: vintage | I love this trench version and this one is a similar option as well.

LOOK 6

This is one of my all-time favourite spring outfits. I know a trench coat isn’t exactly revolutionary spring attire but over a pair of ultra wide leg denim with a simple fitted tee and black Converse it makes a style statement. I particularly enjoy an oversized fit when it comes to a trench coat. It makes for easy layering and a relaxed silhouette always feels chic.

Pairing warm knits with light outwear is a trick I use to extend both categories in my closet. A monochrome match always adds a sophisticated touch.

LINEN TRENCH: old Similar options here, here and here.

OVERSIZE ALPACA SWEATER: Everlane | TTS | In-depth review here.

BLACK STRAIGHT LEG DENIM: old | Linked to a similar option.

LOOK 8

One way I love to wear a big wool scarf is over the shoulders of a trench coat or light jacket. It keeps my shoulders warm and adds dimension to the look in an effortlessly chic way. Give it a go sometime!

I love white denim all year but in the spring it feels extra fresh. Paired with lots of warm tones and luxe textures it feels a little more elevated but still easy-going. This cashmere hoodie is a favourite spring knit because it’s so cozy without being too heavy.

LOOK 10

I’m always excited to bring out my oversized denim jacket in spring. When it’s bit cold, I layer it over a wool sweater with a big scarf on top. Black skinny jeans and chunky suede boots make this look perfect for a morning walk for coffee and croissants or to meet a friend for lunch.

THANKS FOR TUNING IN!

I hope this outfit roundup sparks some ideas for your own early spring style.

  1. Abby says:

So glad to see the return of your outfits posts, Lee! Curious whether you worry about color from your jeans transferring to your light colored Maguire boots. I recently got some light colored Paul Green ones but I have yet to wear them with darker jeans for fear of color transfer. Would love any tips you have! Thanks in advance.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hi Abby, I’m glad to hear that 🙂 I’ve found there’s been some colour transfer from my more indigo blue denim but it hasn’t been too bad otherwise. I use a stain protector on all my suede boots, which does create a barrier to protect them from taking on too much colour. It gets worse the tighter the leg of the jeans, so something a little more like a straight leg or wide leg, isn’t too bad. Hope that helps.

  2. Birgit Scheel says:

Thanks, Lee, for actually practical and wearable spring outfit ideas! Am always wondering in what climate people live that suddenly only sport bare ankles and shorts- in March! Certainly not appropriate here in Germany. I really like your idea of layering warmer and lighter fabrics to get more wear out of all pieces in your wardrobe. Will certainly give that approach a go!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Thank you Brigit 🙂 I’m so glad that idea resonated with you. I hope spring is arriving faster for you in Germany than it is here. xo

  3. Susan Telfer says:

Thank you for these outfit ideas. Early spring in BC is not so warm either. How do you resist the call of colour in spring? I find it very difficult, but don’t actually wear too many colours outside of my neutrals.

    • Susan Telfer says:

I also like how you don’t have too much black. I drift toward black , but black is not my colour.

    • Lee the Bee says:

I usually lean in to one or two colours in spring, most commonly soft greens. Then I feel like I’m getting a taste of colour without overcommitting to it. In summer I wear more colour still and embrace more pattern as well. So I find that’s when I get my fix. I also like to just buy pretty colourful flowers, then I get to look at some beautiful saturation without having to wear it for years. xo
